Our Story

Owner Pastry Chef David Benton started Sugarsweet Cookie + Cake Studio in 2009 baking in his duplex kitchen in East Oakland. Self-taught with only youtube tutorials and baking books to guide him, David spent the next few years perfecting recipes and selling his scrumptiously beautiful pastries online from his duplex.  Combining his love for delicious old fashioned baked goods with a modern artistic twist on design--Sugarsweet became a sought-after success making it one of the busiest online bakeries in the Bay Area.

 

Our mission is to simply provide baking that is real and uncomplicated.  We stay true to scratch baking traditions, never using chemicals or preservatives.  Everything we serve is handmade in our own kitchen and designed by the most talented and creative pastry chefs.  Stop by Sugarsweet and see for yourself how Twentieth-century baking meets Twenty-first century design.

 
 

FAQ

We do birthday cakes, wedding cakes, anniversary cakes, and cakes for just about any occasion you can imagine. We can accommodate you best if we have at least 48 hours notice for your special order. Cake prices include a border and a personalized message. Additional custom decoration is possible with one-two week advance notice at an additional cost. Please place orders on our website, in person or by telephone. We do not take orders by e-mail or on social media.

 

  • Custom cake prices are subject to change depending on design, details, complexity of decoration and serving size.  In general all custom cakes start at $125. Exact quotes are available from customer service staff only, and are good for that business day.
  • In order to hold a date, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required--the remaining balance is due 10 business days prior to the event. Orders placed within 10 business days of the delivery date have to be paid in full at order placement.
  • All dessert orders and holds over $20 must be prepaid.
  • Cancellations: refunds on prepaid cakes will be issued as store credit only and must be requested outside of the ordering time-table (e.g., a ten inch cake must be cancelled at least four days prior to the scheduled pick-up to receive store credit).
  • Please plan ahead for your special event cakes. We take orders on a first come, first served basis, and are sometimes unable to fulfill all order requests.

CUSTOM CAKE DECORATOR

(FULL or Part TIME) $17-$20hr

Custom Cake Decorator/Baker - At least 2 years pastry production and design experience required. This is a Full-time position for someone who is enthusiastic and passionate about creating beautiful cakes.  Looking for candidates with a creative artistic eye and a strong attention to detail--you will be called on to create and design custom cakes and cupcakes that range from the very simple to the very elaborate.  You should be equally comfortable working with fondant, gum paste, modeling chocolate and buttercream. Maintain a high quality of standards in the creation of each product You will be called on to use tools like airbrush guns, stencils, modeling tools and edible printers among other things.  Must have an ability to work with large and small volume orders with ease. Knowing how to make gumpaste flowers is not a requirement but a BIG PLUS if you have this skill. So is having a good sense of humor and a strong work ethic. Job requirement:

  1. To be equally adept with buttercream and fondant cakes.

  2. To cut, carve and sculpt cake shapes : cars, animals, numbers, etc. will be expected.

  3. To design a variety of custom cakes for various occasions including but not limited to-- weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, bridal parties, etc. of various sizes and scopes.

  4. To make and bake cake/cupcake batters.

  5. To stay on trend and up to date with the latest cake design styles...and willing to learn new ones.

  6. To have good piping and cake writing skills.

  7. To sometimes appear at wedding cake functions, expos and events representing Sugarsweet.

  8. To decorate, frost and design cupcakes with sprinkles, toppers and inscriptions.

  9. Preparation of baking product in accordance to company standards, recipes and procedures.

  10. To take inventory stock and restock bakery case, shelves and production ingredients when necessary.

  11. To maintain the highest level of daily kitchen cleanliness and organization making sure the kitchen is cleaned at the beginning and  end of every shift. ServSafe® certified is required.

  12. To come up with cool and fun designs to decorate the monthly display window.

  13. Take daily inventory of kitchen equipment, tools and ingredients.

  14. To learn and and on occasion perform all bakery shifts as needed including but not limited to: -Opening and Closing shifts.

  15. To lift, move & carry up to 50lbs.

  16. To perform frequent walking, bending, kneeling and reaching duties.

  17. To stand and sit for extended periods of time.

DECORATIVE COOKIE DECORATOR

(Feelance/Part-Time) $15.00hr

Are you experienced and talented in making decorative cookies?  If so, we are looking for you to make beautiful cookies for our clients. No baking required, just decorating. Working remotely is an option.



Job Requirements: 

  1. Designing decorative sugar cookies with royal icing.   

  2. To have a great artistic eye and creative skill for decorative cookies.

  3. Responsibilities include: color mixing, decorating sugar cookies using a variety of tools, colors, stencils, edible paper, and various techniques for custom orders, catering and front of house display case.  Must have experience with royal icing, and fondant. 

  4. Can work remotely.

BAKERY/KITCHEN ASSISTANT

(PART-TIME) $13.75 hr

 

We are looking to hire Bakery/Kitchen Assistant. In this position you will be a very valuable member of the team—-you will learn alot and be a jack of all trades. You will be assisting the chefs in all areas of making custom cakes at the same time getting real experience and sharpening your skills. You will be working the front desk, running errands, making deliveries and making sure the bakery is clean and tidy and doing generally anything that needs to be done. Ideal candidate is a culinary student or someone who really wants to learn everything about cakes and baking. We are looking for people who have a true passion and enthusiasm for baking and dessert decorating and who’s dream job is working in a busy, fun and supportive environment where  your creativity and work ethic are your most valuable tools.

 

You will be required:

 

  1. Mixing doughs and batters, making toppers, garnishes and designs for cakes and cupcakes, among other creative things.

  2. Running errands and making occasional deliveries.

  3. Occasionally working the front desk and the cash register.

  4. Making sure the kitchen, front of the house and front of the bakery are clean.

Candidate must:  

• Be within commuting distance of the bakery in Oakland.

• Be able to sit or stand for long hours and lift up to 50 lb.

• Fluent in English both verbally and written.
