Our Story

Owner Pastry Chef David Benton started Sugarsweet Cookie + Cake Studio in 2009 baking in his duplex kitchen in East Oakland. Self-taught with only youtube tutorials and baking books to guide him, David spent the next few years perfecting recipes and selling his scrumptiously beautiful pastries online from his duplex.  Combining his love for delicious old fashioned baked goods with a modern artistic twist on design--Sugarsweet became a sought-after success making it one of the busiest online bakeries in the Bay Area. David has since outgrown his duplex and is now opening Sugarsweet to the public with his very first storefront bakery on MacArthur Blvd in Oakland.  

 

Our mission is to simply provide baking that is real and uncomplicated.  We stay true to scratch baking traditions, never using chemicals or preservatives.  Everything we serve is handmade in our own kitchen and designed by the most talented and creative pastry chefs.  Stop by Sugarsweet and see for yourself how Twentieth-century baking meets Twenty-first century design.

 
 

FAQ

We do birthday cakes, wedding cakes, anniversary cakes, and cakes for just about any occasion you can imagine. We can accommodate you best if we have at least 48 hours notice for your special order. Cake prices include a border and a personalized message. Additional custom decoration is possible with one-two week advance notice at an additional cost. Please place orders on our website, in person or by telephone. We do not take orders by e-mail or on social media.

 

  • Custom cake prices are subject to change depending on design, details, complexity of decoration and serving size.  In general all custom cakes start at $125. Exact quotes are available from customer service staff only, and are good for that business day.
  • In order to hold a date, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required--the remaining balance is due 10 business days prior to the event. Orders placed within 10 business days of the delivery date have to be paid in full at order placement.
  • All dessert orders and holds over $20 must be prepaid.
  • Cancellations: refunds on prepaid cakes will be issued as store credit only and must be requested outside of the ordering time-table (e.g., a ten inch cake must be cancelled at least four days prior to the scheduled pick-up to receive store credit).
  • Please plan ahead for your special event cakes. We take orders on a first come, first served basis, and are sometimes unable to fulfill all order requests.

BAKER/CAKE DECORATOR

(FULL-TIME) $18-$20Hr

We are a small brand new minority-owned modern bakery that specializes in beautiful custom made cakes, cupcakes, decorative and drop cookies.  We are currently looking for experienced, highly talented, skilled and artistically creative  cake bakers/decorators for Baker/Cake Decorator and Pastry Assistant.  We are looking for people who have a true passion for baking and dessert decorating and who’s dream job is working in a busy, fun and supportive environment where  your imagination, creativity and artistic skill are your most valuable tools.   At Sugarsweet we are artists first, bakers second...So your ability to think creatively in, out and sometimes way out of the box is what we value and cherish most.   Our clients include everyday folks, young and old, corporations and public figures.


Currently Hiring For:


Baker/Cake Decorator  - 1-2 years pastry production and design experience required. Must have a creative artistic eye and a strong attention to detail--you will be called on to create and execute cakes and cupcakes that range from the very simple to the very elaborate.  You must be equally adept at working with fondant, gum paste, modeling chocolate and buttercream.   Maintain a high quality of standards in the creation of each product  You will be called on to use tools like airbrush guns, stencils, modeling tools and edible printers among other things.  Must have an ability to work with large and small volume orders with ease.   Must be capable of developing the appropriate icing color  tints based on custom order specifications.  Knowing how to make  gumpaste flowers is not a requirement but a BIG PLUS.  So is having a good sense of humor and a strong work ethic.


You will be required:

 

  1. To design a variety of cake styles  for various occasions including but not limited to-- weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, bridal parties, etc. of various sizes and scopes
  2. To stay on trend and up to date with the latest cake design styles...and willing to learn new ones.
  3. To have good piping and cake writing skills
  4. To sometimes appear at wedding cake functions, expos and events representing Sugarsweet.
  5. To decorate, frost and design cupcakes with sprinkles, toppers and inscriptions.
  6. To cut and carve cake shapes : cars, animals, numbers, etc. will be expected
  7. Preparation of baking product  in accordance to company standards, recipes and procedures
  8. To stock and restock bakery case, shelves and production ingredients when necessary   
  9. To maintain the highest level of daily kitchen cleanliness and organization making sure the kitchen is cleaned at the end of every shift.  ServSafe® certified is required
  10. To have good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with other Team Members and assistants.
  11. To come up with cool and fun designs to  decorate the monthly display window
  12. Control freshness by coding all product and pulling out-of-code merchandise daily.  
  13. Take stock of storage and shelf areas.
  14. Take daily inventory of kitchen equipment, tools and ingredients
  15. To learn and and on occasion perform all bakery shifts as needed including but not limited to: -Opening and Closing shifts
  16. To lift, move & carry up to 50lbs
  17. To perform frequent walking, bending, kneeling and reaching duties
  18. To stand and sit for extended periods of time


Qualifications: Minimum two (2) years of experience decorating special occasion and wedding cakes , culinary degree a plus.

DECORATIVE COOKIE DESIGNER

(On-call/PART-TIME) $15Hr

  2. To have a great artistic eye and creative skill  for decorative  and drop cookies.
  3. Responsibilities include: following recipes, making sugar & drop cookie dough, color mixing, cutting out and decorating shaped sugar cookies using a variety of cutters and tools for custom orders, catering and front of house case.  Must have experience with royal icing, and fondant.
  4. To problem-solve and be hard working

BAKERY FRONT DESK CASHIER

(PART-TIME) $13.50

We are a small brand new minority-owned modern bakery that specializes in beautiful custom made cakes, cupcakes, decorative and drop cookies.  We are currently hiring for experienced Front Desk Clerk/Cashier.  We are looking for  a Superstar Front Desk Clerk/Cashier who has a background in Customer Service and working a POS cashier. At Sugarsweet great customer service is at the top of the list and one of the the most valuable commodities we offer.  


Qualifications: Minimum one (1) year of experience front desk customer/cashier service .  Barista experience a plus.  Fun positive attitude!

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Providing friendly welcoming  and accommodating service with a confident, friendly relaxed attitude and a helpful spirit is a must for this job.
Reliable and dependable.
High School Diploma or equivalent
Assisting customers with order placement and pick-up
Working the cashier/POS and promoting sales, assisting customers and boxing up orders.
Food and Beverages Prep--including coffee, espressos
Strong attention to detail - Good appreciation and knowledge of baking is a plus
 Wrap, package, price  and serve cookies, cakes, cake slices and cupcakes for customers daily
An ability  to communicate clearly,  friendly and professionally in person and by phone.  
Have a  professional but relaxed business manner, a “can-do” attitude and to provide for a clean store environment.
Stock shelves and counters with product and supplies.
Utilize product knowledge to promote sales.
Stay informed of store policies, procedures, and promotions.
Manage a neat, well maintained front of the house
Able to problem-solve
Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by Bakery Manager/Owner.
Shipping and receiving packages and daily mail.
